LET'S TALK ABOUT LE DERNIER JOUR D'UN CONDAMNEE

I needed to read this book for school. I must admit I didn't like it much at first, but in the end, it is so well-written. I guess you might appreciate it even more if you know the whole story behind it because, indeed, its author, Victor Hugo, fought to abolish the death penalty. The book recounts the last day of a man who is about to be executed. He experiences a range of emotions like guilt, fear, and anger.

A LITTLE BIT OF CONTEXT ABOUT LE DERNIER JOUR D'UN CONDAMNEE

This book was published in 1829 and is presented like a diary—the diary of a man condemned to death. There have been a few adaptations in cinema, as well as in cartoons. It received a lot of criticism because Hugo's views on the death penalty were not shared by most of society at the time.

WHAT TO READ IF YOU LIKED READING LE DERNIER JOUR D'UN CONDAMNEE

If you enjoyed reading Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné, I would recommend you read Claude Gueux, which is another book by Victor Hugo. It is shorter, and I personally preferred it.

FAVOURITE QUOTES FROM LE DERNIER JOUR D'UN CONDAMNEE

“Les hommes sont tous condamnés à mort avec des sursis indéfinis.”( translation :"All men are condemned to death with indefinite reprieves.")
