I must admit that I first watched this play before reading it, and I think that might be the best way to study it. It is quite complicated to understand, but the love story is well depicted and very intricate. I thought that Araminte was the perfect representation of the precious women of the 18th century. The friendship between Dubois and Dorante shows an inversion of roles between the masters and the valets.

"Les Fausses Confidences" is a play written by Marivaux, a French playwright, in 1737. "Les Fausses Confidences" explores many important themes, with the main ones being:

  • Love, but most importantly, the obstacles around confessing this love.
  • Social condition, as Dorante is a poor man and his condition restricts him from marrying the woman he loves: Araminte.

"Les Fausses Confidences" means "The False Confidences" in French, by the way.

WHAT TO READ IF YOU LIKED LES FAUSSES CONFIDENCES


If you liked reading Les Fausses Confidences, I would recommend Les Caprices de Marianne, which is also a play but shorter. The dialogues are very beautiful and intense. If you like comedies, I recommend any play by Molière, a French playwright who wrote really funny and easy-to-read plays.

 LET'S TALK ABOUT MADME BOVARY I have to admit that I didn't read that novel because it was on my shelf, but rather because my 8th-grade teacher made us read it.  LEST'S TALK ABOUT "UNE VIE" The story of a fighter, probably the most impressive french woman with the most incredibly sad story. Simone Veil is the role model of so many women, and I have to admit that she is mine to, she beacme after reading her autobiography : "une vie". The first part of the book talks about her life as jew during the second world war. She spend time in the camp. And even after all of these ordeals she became one of the most political influant woman. All her life she helped people, she helped in the prison, with drugs addiction and she promulgate the Veil law : the right to abort in France in 1974. A LITTLE CONTEXT ABOUT "UNE VIE" " Une vie" was written by Simone Veil, one ex-justice mister of France. It was published in 2007. It was one of the best sell in France in 2008.   LET'S TALK ABOUT LES CAHIERS DE DOUAI I'm not a big fan of poems and poetry, but I had to read Les Cahiers de Douai for school this year. I have to admit that I quite enjoyed it. What I loved the most about it was the story around this collection. Did you know Arthur Rimbaud was only 17 when he wrote it, and it is a pure masterpiece? He also wrote it during two runaways to Belgium (he was French). I loved how, as a teenager, he denounced social issues. A LITTLE BIT OF CONTEXT ABOUT LES CAHIERS DE DOUAI As I mentioned, Arthur Rimbaud wrote Les Cahiers de Douai when he was 17 years old, in 1870, during a time when France was at war with Prussia. Life wasn't easy, and people couldn't express themselves freely. Napoleon III, an emperor, was ruling the country with an iron fist. The collection is composed of 22 poems in 2 books.
