Before reading Normal People, I didn't understand when my friend was telling me, 'It describes the most typical, unfortunate yet beautiful love story.' But now I understand what he meant. Indeed, Connell isn't the prince charming who changes for the nerd he is deeply in love with, and Marianne does not turn into the best version of herself after a makeover. This novel, set in Ireland and taking place over 4 years, perfectly describes the poor decisions and inappropriate behaviors of young people who are still figuring out what to do, normal people's behaviors.

Written by Sally Rooney, an Irish novelist, Normal People was published in 2018. It quickly became a US bestseller, selling over 65,000 copies. It was adapted into a series in April 2020 on BBC Three.

If you enjoyed Normal People, I would recommend reading The Ace of Hearts, which is funnier and spicier as well. Of course, the issues aren't the same, but the characters also struggle with personal issues, and the love story is also quite different.
